16mm film comes in two base materials: cellulose acetate (used 1923-1990s) and polyester (used 1990s onwards). Acetate-based 16mm suffers from vinegar syndrome — the same chemical decomposition that affects 8mm and Super 8. The acetate base releases acetic acid as it breaks down, the film shrinks and curls, and eventually it cannot pass through any projector or scanner. Most home and professional 16mm reels from the 1920s through the 1980s are acetate-based and at risk.
The colour stocks used for 16mm were generally more stable than home 8mm — much of the home 16mm we receive is on Kodachrome or Ektachrome, both of which fade more slowly than the cheaper colour stocks. But over 50-80 years, even the best colour film loses some saturation and shifts toward magenta or yellow.
16mm has a unique problem that 8mm doesn't: sound. Many 16mm reels have sound recorded directly on the film, either as an optical (variable-area or variable-density) track running alongside the picture, or as a magnetic stripe. Magnetic stripes on 16mm are fragile and prone to flaking, and they require specialised playback equipment to capture the sound. Most home digitisation services skip the sound entirely or do a poor job of capturing it.
The fourth problem, common to all cine film formats, is playback equipment. 16mm projectors were last manufactured in the early 1990s and parts are scarce. The professional cine scanners used by archives cost £50,000+ — most digitisation services don't have them.
