Photographic negatives are made from a flexible plastic base coated with a light-sensitive emulsion containing the image. The base material has changed several times over the format's history. Pre-1950s negatives use cellulose nitrate (highly flammable and degrades to a brown sticky goo). 1950s-1990s negatives use cellulose acetate, which suffers from vinegar syndrome — the same chemical decomposition that affects 8mm film. Modern negatives (1990s+) use polyester, which is much more stable.
For most family negatives, the failure mode is dye fading. Colour negative film stores the image as cyan, magenta, and yellow dye couplers — the inverse of what you see in the final print. These dyes fade over decades, with the cyan layer fading first. The result is a colour shift that compounds when the negative is then printed: the original print might have looked normal, but a re-print of the same negative today would have a strong magenta cast.
Black-and-white negatives are more stable than colour because the image is stored as fine silver particles rather than dyes. But silver oxidises slowly, especially in environments with sulphur compounds in the air. B&W negatives from the 1900s through the 1950s often show characteristic brown spots and a slight overall yellowing.
The third problem is physical damage. Negatives are fragile — they scratch easily, they curl in dry environments, and they stick to themselves in humid storage. Many family negatives have spent decades in cheap envelopes or album sleeves that aren't archival, accumulating dust, scratches, and chemical damage from the storage materials themselves.

Negative scanning requires very different equipment from print scanning. Where photo prints reflect light off a paper surface, negatives transmit light through a film base — the scanner needs a backlight that passes precisely calibrated light through the film. The two best dedicated film scanners are the Nikon Coolscan series (sadly discontinued) and the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i. We maintain both for our negative restoration work.
The headline feature of these scanners is Digital ICE — an infrared scanning system that detects dust and scratches on the film surface independently of the actual image. Unlike software-based dust removal, which has to guess at what's image and what's dust, Digital ICE uses an infrared pass to physically detect surface defects, then mask them in the final scan. The result is dramatically cleaner scans without any loss of fine image detail.
(Note: Digital ICE doesn't work on Kodachrome film or true silver-gelatin black-and-white film, because both are opaque to infrared. For Kodachrome and B&W negatives, we do manual dust removal in post-processing.)
Each negative is scanned at 4000 DPI minimum (the native resolution of the Nikon Coolscan), which produces a 20+ megapixel image from a 35mm negative. This is far more detail than any photo lab ever printed from the same negative — the negative contains information that the original printing process couldn't capture on paper. The result is digital files that show more detail than the original prints did.
Post-scan, we colour-correct to compensate for dye shifts, balance the tonal range, and apply AI enhancement (optional) for further detail recovery.
One technical detail most customers don't know: every colour negative has an orange dye mask built into the film base. This orange cast is normal — it was designed to compensate for colour crossover during the darkroom printing process. When scanning negatives digitally, the orange mask must be precisely subtracted during colour inversion. Consumer scanning software often handles this poorly, producing washed-out or colour-shifted results. Our scanning workflow includes film-stock-specific orange mask correction that produces accurate colours from the first scan.
Nikon Coolscan / Plustek scanning, Digital ICE infrared dust removal, colour correction, and tonal balancing are all included as standard. No "premium scanning" or "negative handling" surcharge.
