Why Your Photo Prints Need Digitising Now

Photo prints are made from silver halide crystals or chromogenic dye couplers suspended in a gelatin emulsion on a paper or resin-coated paper base. Unlike slides, which are translucent and store the image in the dyes themselves, prints rely on light reflecting off a paper substrate. That paper substrate is the print's biggest enemy — paper is a hostile environment for photographic chemistry.

The first failure mode is silver oxidation. Black-and-white prints store the image as fine silver particles, which slowly oxidise in air and turn from black to brown over decades. The result is the characteristic warm-brown "sepia" tone you see on old family photos — except the original image wasn't sepia, it was crisp black-and-white. The shift is gradual but irreversible without restoration.

Colour prints suffer from dye coupler fading. The cyan dye fades fastest (especially under fluorescent or sunlight exposure), leaving prints with a pink or magenta cast. By the 1980s, photo manufacturers had largely solved this with more stable dyes, but anything from the 1950s through the 1970s — exactly the era of most family photos — uses dyes that have shifted significantly.

Storage damage is the third problem. Photos kept in cheap albums (especially the "magnetic" peel-and-stick albums from the 1970s) get glued to the page over time. Photos in shoeboxes get scuffed against each other. Photos exposed to humidity grow mould or warp. Photos in attics get heat damage. Every storage environment outside a climate-controlled archive is doing some damage every year.

How We Restore Your Photo Prints

Photo print restoration is fundamentally a flatbed scanning process — but doing it well requires the right equipment. We use Epson Perfection V850 Pro scanners for general photo work and Plustek OpticPro for higher-resolution requirements. Both have a wider dynamic range than consumer all-in-one scanners and can capture detail in dark shadow areas that cheaper scanners crush to black.

Photos arrive in many formats — loose prints, photos in albums (including the dreaded magnetic albums), envelopes of holiday photos, framed prints, and photo books. We extract photos from albums and frames carefully, with archival techniques to release prints that have stuck to album pages without damaging the back of the print.

Each print is scanned at 600 DPI minimum (1200 DPI for smaller prints where extra detail matters). Scanning is followed by software-based dust removal, scratch correction, and colour rebalancing — we reverse the magenta/pink shift on faded colour prints and bring back the contrast that age has muted. Black-and-white prints get tonal correction to recover detail in the highlights and shadows.

For severely damaged or torn prints, AI enhancement is available as an add-on. The AI tools can reconstruct missing detail, repair tears, and remove watermarks from amateur prints — far beyond what traditional scanning can achieve.

For black-and-white photos, our AI enhancement includes optional colourisation — transforming monochrome family portraits into full colour with historically accurate tones. Skin tones, clothing, foliage, and sky are all rendered naturally based on the AI's understanding of the era and context. The original black-and-white scan is always preserved alongside the colourised version, so you get both.
